ICOM RedLists

The International Council of Museums (ICOM), with the support of the US Department of State, publishes Red Lists of Cultural Objects at Risk in crisis and conflict regions throughout the world.

Rote Listen

As a supplement to the information in the UNESCO database, the International Council of Museums (ICOM), with the support of the US Department of State, publishes Red Lists of Cultural Objects at Risk in crisis and conflict regions throughout the world.

Red Lists are published for continents, regions or countries at particular risk. They typically include sample categories of objects rather than specific cultural items that have been stolen; details of these latter can be found in the INTERPOL Stolen Works of Art Database.

The Red List for Iraq was redrafted in 2015 (on the basis of the first version published in 2003). A Red List for Syria has been available since 2014. Both lists are available in multiple languages (English, Arabic, French, German and Turkish).

If ICOM has published a Red List for cultural objects originating from a particular country, region or continent, heightened due diligence requirements apply under German law to anyone intending to deal in these objects for commercial purposes (Section 44 of the German Act on the Protection of Cultural Property (Kulturgutschutzgesetz, KGSG)); this means that it is deemed reasonable to expend a greater amount of effort on investigating the origin of the cultural object in question.

An overview of all the Red Lists published by ICOM can be found on the ICOM website.
